The task of the competition was to develop a master plan for a new district immediately south of the main train station of the old university city of Heidelberg. The urban plan had to integrate a variety of research facilities as well as commercial buildings and housing.

The design provides a generous, urban square south of the station. A twelve-story high-rise building marks the entrance to the new district and leads to the “Zollhofgarten”, a park at the heart of the district featuring a listed historical market hall, bordered by research institutes and high tech company headquarters.

The result of the competition in May 2009 establishes the basis for the master plan, which was then further developed in an interdisciplinary work by the authorities and the winning team. Our interdisciplinary team composed of city planning, urban design, architecture and landscape planning disciplines collaborated closely with the city planning office, the office for economic promotion, the office for traffic management, the office for environmental protection, trade supervision and energy, the civil engineering office and the landscape and forestry office to develop the design and development framework for the site.

The proposal is understood as a robust and flexible working tool, which suits the private and public planning process. In addition, design concepts are presented as principles and suggestions that take into account the urban planning, architectural and landscaping aspects and give the Campus II a rooted legible sense of place and a corporate identity.
